A valiant effort by the Arizona Senator, but one that was doomed to failure since we know Democrats love their earmarks so much.
Today Sen. John McCain failed in his effort to strip thousands on earmarks from a government funding bill moving through Congress. His amendment would also have reduced the funding for several government departments to last year’s lower spending levels.
His amendment failed 63-32, with a simple majority needed for passage. Only two Democrats voted with McCain: Evan Bayh and Claire McCaskill.
There were eight Republicans who voted against McCain, thereby supporting the earmarks and the higher levels of spending. All but one of those Republicans (Snowe) sit on the Senate Appropriations Committee. That panel is tasked with writing the spending bills and are best positioned to add earmarks. Those GOP committee members voting against McCain were Bennett, Bond, Cochran, Collins, Murkowski, Shelby and Specter.
Congratulations to all of you GOPers who voted to keep earmarks. We’ll be remembering your vote for big government corruptness next time you’re up for re-election.
This was a good move by McCain, because despite the fact that he knew it was going to fail, it forced the Democrats to take a pro-earmarks position that we can leverage against them later on. Also, it exposed a few more RINOs, which is always a helpful thing.
The Omnibus Octobill, with its 8000 earmarks, is just another stone in the yellow brick road to socialism that BHO has us building. I guess that’s what he meant when he talked about those “shovel ready jobs.”

One of the two people that saved McCain from a 538-0 shutout, ‘Joe the Plumber,’ apparently loathed McCain and his liberalesque views. The other person, of course, was Sarah Palin.
‘Joe the Plumber’ told conservative radio host Glenn Beck on Tuesday that he felt “dirty” after hitting the campaign trail with Republican presidential nominee John McCain and “seeing some of the things that take place,” Politico reported.
Joe Wurzelbacher said he was specifically put off by McCain when it came to talk of the $700 billion bailout.
“When I was on the bus with him, I asked him a lot of questions about the bailout because most Americans did not want that to happen,” Wurzelbacher told Beck. “I asked him some pretty direct questions. Some of the answers you guys are gonna receive they appalled me, absolutely. I was angry. In fact, I wanted to get off the bus after I talked to him.”
You have a right to be angry, Joe. McCain was the worst pick our party could have made for our candidate, since he does not represent conservatism and had little, if any, concern for the base of the party. We were forced to support him because he had that little (R) after his name.
Wurzelbacher said he stayed on the trail with McCain “honestly, because the thought of Barack Obama as president scares me even more.”
Join the club, buddy. Join the club.

WASHINGTON — Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama said Sunday his Republican rival deserves no credit for helping to forge a tentative agreement on the $700 billion bailout of Wall Street.
Instead, Obama said he deserves credit for making sure the proposal includes safeguards for taxpayers. Obama said he is inclined to support the bailout because it includes increased oversight, relief for homeowners facing foreclosure and limits on executive compensation for chief executives of firms that receive government help.
The Chosen One is acting like people would WANT credit for this ridiculous piece of socialistic garbage.

WASHINGTON — John McCain bested Barack Obama 50-46 percent among registered voters in the latest USA Today/Gallup poll, jumping 11 points over his previous showing and taking his biggest lead since January.
McCain’s showing is credited in part to a well-received Republican Convention last week fueled largely by the surprise pick of McCain’s vice presidential running mate, Sarah Palin. The numbers out Monday show McCain wiped out a 7-point lead Obama received after the Democratic convention two weeks ago.
Convention bounce…Sarah Palin…Obama failing at life. They all add up to good poll numbers for the McShamnesty camp!
The numbers are drawing scorn in the Chicago headquarters of Obama for President.
“Up or down, we believe national polls are meaningless,” Obama spokesman Bill Burton told FOX News.
Why do I have this sneaking suspicion that if The Obamessiah had the lead, those poll numbers would be considered a lot less “meaningless?” Oh, I don’t know, maybe it’s the rank hypocrisy puddling around the feet of everyone involved in the Obama campaign.

The eight-point ‘bounce’ Obama supposedly had earlier this week has evaporated, according to a new CBS poll.
The presidential race between Barack Obama and John McCain is now even at 42 percent, according to a new CBS News poll conducted Monday-Wednesday of this week. Twelve percent are undecided according to the poll, and one percent said they wouldn’t vote.
This is in contrast to a poll conducted last weekend, where the Obama-Biden ticket led McCain-Palin by eight points, 48 percent to 40 percent.
McCain has also closed the enthusiasm gap some with Obama, but it still exists. Fifty-five percent of Obama’s supporters are enthusiastic about their choice, and now so are 35% of McCain’s. Last weekend, just 25 percent of McCain’s supporters were enthusiastic about him, compared to 67 of Obama’s supporters.
Eight points in three days? Thank you Gov. Palin.

Multiple sources are reporting and confirming that John McCain has picked Alaska governor Sarah Palin as his running mate.
We were looking for an out of the box pick to steal the Obamessiah’s aura. Here it is.
She supports drilling in ANWR and is pro-life. Plus, she’ll be the youngest, brightest star among the four candidates (even Obama’s junior). Anybody hear a swing in the youth vote?
More later.

Looks like the shine is wearing off the Obamessiah:
WASHINGTON (AFP) - John McCain has grabbed the lead in a new opinion poll over rival Barack Obama, in the latest sign of accelerating momentum for the Republican as the key phase dawns in their White House battle.
McCain led Obama 47 percent to 46 percent in a nationwide matchup in the new George Washington University Battleground poll published on Wednesday. The Illinois Democrat had led the same poll by 49 percent to 47 percent in May.
